The “Shock” Your Body Takes Going From Summer to Fall

Have you ever noticed that when summer starts to fade and fall arrives, your body seems to notice before your mind does?

One day you’re wearing sandals and enjoying long, warm evenings, and suddenly the mornings are cooler, the days are shorter, and your energy feels a little different. You may find yourself feeling more tired, congested, achy, dry, or even a little under the weather.

In Chinese Medicine, we recognize that our bodies are constantly responding to changes in the environment. The transition from the expansive, warm energy of summer to the cooler, contracting energy of fall can be a bigger adjustment than we realize.

Fall is associated with the Lung and respiratory system in Chinese Medicine. This is why seasonal changes can sometimes show up as allergies, sinus congestion, coughs, dry skin, or increased susceptibility to colds. The shift can also affect sleep, digestion, mood, and overall energy.

So How Can Chinese Medicine help?

Acupuncture can help your body adapt rather than react to the seasonal change. By supporting circulation, regulating the nervous system, strengthening the body's natural defenses, and addressing individual imbalances, acupuncture can help ease some of those uncomfortable symptoms that come with the change of season.

This is also a great time to pay attention to the basics: get enough sleep, stay hydrated, eat warm and nourishing foods, protect yourself from the cooler temperatures, and give yourself permission to slow down a little.

Think of it as helping your body make a graceful transition instead of asking it to slam on the brakes.

At Mend, we look at the whole person—not just the symptom. Sometimes a little support during a seasonal transition is exactly what your body needs to feel balanced, energized, and ready for the months ahead.
